Hardware Encoders
If you are serious about quality and reliability, a hardware encoder is the way to go. Using a hardware encoder removes the entire stream encoding workload from your computer and gives you benefits like better audio monitoring, video passthrough, local recording and push-button streaming.
Virtually any hardware encoder which supports RTMP or SRT can send a stream to Streamwell.

Encoders that do not work (yet) 😖
AJA Helo and Helo Plus: A test conducted on 2024-04-30 confirms AJA encoders are not compatible with some of the characters used in our RTMP stream keys, and do not yet support use of Stream ID in SRT, therefore they remain incompatible with Streamwell. AJA have now been made aware of these incompatibilities and we will continue to work with them to try and achieve compatibility over time.
BirdDog: A test conducted on 2024-05-15 determined two issues in the BirdDog firmware preventing compatibility with Streamwell for RTMP and SRT. With RTMP, the issue is that the BirdDog interface only accepts stream keys up to 80 characters in length. This limitation is not part of the RTMP standard so BirdDog will need to change this in their firmware. With SRT, the issue is that the BirdDog interface forces the Stream ID to all uppercase characters, therefore it fails validation (which is case-sensitive). We have submitted support tickets to BirdDog and will update this document as the situation evolves.
We are constantly verifying hardware encoders and seeking to build out guides/integrations for each one as we encounter them. If you have an unlisted hardware encoder that you'd like to use or get certified please contact us and we would love to help you check it out!
